Chitchat (11)

So the fourth anniversary of my blog is this month! I’m planning on doing a retrospective sort of thing near the end of November, I think, and that’s all I’ll say about THAT for now.

This latest blogging break was kind of weird. Usually when I take a break I come back super excited to blog again, but right now I’m still kind of meh about everything. I think I need to try being more structured in my blogging, like I was when I was in college (for example, and also), and maybe that’ll help. I’m also going to make more of an effort to visit y’all and leave comments (and to keep up with comments here), and I’m going to do that by dedicating an afternoon each weekend to spending time at a coffee shop or library or something with my laptop! Yay!

Right now I’m thinking I’ll do three-to-four posts a week: two review posts, one chitchat/currently reading post, and one feature post. The features take the longest to write but I’m going to do a bit each evening after work and I think it’ll be really good! And then on the weekends I’ll format them. Yay, planning!

Other than blogging, life has been going pretty great. Job is easy, I got some good coffee from the grocery store yesterday, the buses aren’t too terrible. Also, it’s getting colder! Which means I can wear sweaters and/or my winter coats again! Winter! Yes!

Okay, anyway: regular posts should start showing up next week, I hope. See you then! In the meantime, leave me comments about what y’all have been up to recently! Yes? Yes.

I’ve been feeling an urge to read my own TBR books lately, so I’ve dug through my ALA book pile and found this one: Wicked Plants by Amy Stewart. It’s been on my wishlist for YEARS and I was super happy to get a copy from the publisher in June. Now that I’m finally reading it, I wish I’d done it sooner!

It’s basically a reference guide to deadly, dangerous, and intoxicating/illegal plants, only without any use as an actual reference and way less scientific-y than you might think. (Amy Stewart specifically says NOT to use it to identify plants, btw. DON’T DO IT.) I especially like how the author mixed in pop culture references with the more straightforward descriptions of what each plant’ll do to you if you eat it. For example! In the wolfsbane entry, she mentions Harry Potter. In an entry about poisonous mushrooms, she mentions Alice in Wonderland. Huzzah!

One of the nicest things about this book is the illustrations/woodcuts! They’re kinda retro and creepy-cool, if you know what I mean.

Plus, the COVER. omg, I love the cover. It’s even better in real life, too!

What’re you reading this week?

  1. I too say yay to winter! I love that you already have the snow up on your blog. I hope that you are feeling happier about blogging soon, because I like reading your posts and miss them when they are gone.

  2. It does feel nice to be bundling ourselves up in coats and scarves and things again but really I do wish it were summer again. Do not like the cold, brr. It makes me stay under the covers and not leave and it’s hard to function. Though the upside is I get to read more books! πŸ™‚

I hope you get back into the groove of blogging soon, in time for your blog anniversary. πŸ™‚

What I’ve been up to: same old, same old, book blogging and food blogging, and working late at nights. My three children and myself and my husband are all having our birthdays in the winter, so I’m up to my ears in Christmas and birthday shopping, too.

    1. I like the cold, mostly, except when I need to type and my hands are too frozen. πŸ™

Happy (early?) birthdays to you and your family! πŸ˜€

  3. I’ve been going through the same kind of blogging meh-ness. I mean, I was away for TWO MONTHS and have now only been back at it for two weeks and am already like ‘Well, okay. Maybe I won’t post this week.’ Not a good start, I’d say.

I hope you find something that makes you excited about blogging again! And if you do, can you share it with me?

    1. I surely will! So far my thing seems to be, er…wanting to have a record of my thoughts on various books, and being too lazy to just write them down in a notebook somewhere? So I blog them instead? Seems to be working, so far.
