Currently Reading: Magyk by Angie Sage

I decided to try and catch up with the Septimus Heap books! And hey– turns out I’m only two behind. Yay! It’s been YEARS since I read the early books, though, so that means I need to do a reread.

Septimus Heap, the seventh son of the seventh son, disappears the night he is born, pronounced dead by the midwife. That same night, the baby’s father, Silas Heap, comes across an abandoned child in the snow—a newborn girl with violet eyes. Who is this mysterious baby girl, and what really happened to the Heaps’ beloved son Septimus? (from Amazon)

It’s taking me longer than I thought? Like, I’m only on the first book (affiliate link) and it’s been two days since I started it. I mean, YES, I did marathon the entire first season of Scrubs yesterday, so, y’know…not a lot of reading time. ANYWAY. Magyk

Thoughts about this here first book!

It does some REALLY awesome things with the “chosen one” storyline (even though I remember the twist, it’s still pretty freakin’ cool!), and I really like how the secret about Septimus is kept until nearly the end. It’s like a mystery!

YAY for Jenna! I don’t remember liking her this much the first time I read Magyk. She’s such a good character, though: both tough and strong AND still kind and willing to help people. Layers! Yes.

Some of the more silly magical/world-building stuff is bugging me more than it did before. For instance: nobody gives a crap about Jenna’s birth dad because everything’s passed down through the female side, so the men were kinda just left alone. On the one hand, possible biting commentary about all the male-dominated royal lines that didn’t give a crap about mothers? On the other, for a book so focused on the power of family and love and FAMILY, ignoring a parent entirely is kinda…weird. (He shows up later in another book, though, doesn’t he? Or am I imagining things?)

Have you ever read the Septimus Heap series?

  1. I remember reading this a long time ago, but it was pretty good! I don’t remember the tw- OHH, okay, I do. Well. I know when I read it the first time I went all “holy moley!” at the revelation. And yes – I adore Jenna’s character. She’s my favorite out of all the others in the series. 🙂

Heh, I’m one book behind, but I need to find the time to get to it! And possibly a re-read because I’m not sure if I’ll remember all that I’m supposed to, heh.

    1. I love long series (they really give you a chance to soak up the characters/worldbuilding/etc.) but they can be SUCH a pain when you’re a few books behind and can’t remember possibly-important details from earlier books. Luckily the Septimus Heap books are so easy to read– they’re pretty long but they flow well!
