paperbacks / read Mar. 12-13, 2013 (reread) / source: bought / Amazon: Which Witch? & The Secret of Platform 13

One-line summary: Evil wizard wants to get married to the evilist witch ever, so he holds an “evil” contest amongst the local witches. (Which Witch?) / Misfit group of heroes go to another world to rescue their lost prince– who is a total BRAT. (The Secret of Platform 13)

I think these were the first two Eva Ibbotson books I ever read, and at the time I didn’t recognize how good they were. I think I liked them, kinda? But I didn’t pay attention or something and I thought they were just so-so books, something like a 2 bird rating equivalent. I’ve rated them higher now, and that’s because I must have been in a better mood when I reread them last month.

In the right mood, Which Witch? and The Secret of Platform 13 are adorable. And funny! And just a tiny bit sarcastic– so gentle a sarcasm that I might even be imagining it. These are comforting books, too, for those who miss older children’s books in the line of The Phantom Tollbooth or even Dr. Seuss. If you’ve never read books like that, Eva Ibbotson’s might be a good place to start– it’s never too late for nostalgia, after all!

My favorite of the two is The Secret of Platform 13, because of the characters, but both of them are good reads.

Have any of you read these two books? Which one is your favorite?

  1. It’s been ages, but I think I remember liking Which Witch better. I need to reread Ibbotson’s children’s books! It’s been a while since I read anything by her apart from her romance novels, and her children’s books are really sweet too. They do not deserve my neglect.
