Blogging tip: Don't try to do everything all at once.

One of the most important things about blogging is, I think, doing things in moderation. Sometimes you can get sucked into doing fifty different things at once, get overwhelmed, and then those fifty things you were doing end up mediocre instead of amazing. What I’d recommend doing is focusing first on blogging: write posts, keep up with comments, visit other bloggers and leave comments on their blogs, and work on making great content for your blog posts. And read books, of course! Then, when you’ve got that down, head over to Twitter, Ning, Facebook, etc. Meet people, start projects (but not too many at once), and join in on memes, challenges, and so on.

Social media in particular is fun, but if you don’t pay attention it can suck up all your time and energy– time and energy that could be going into reading more books or writing more blog posts. I’m speaking from experience, here! It’s way too easy to get overwhelmed with all the different things bloggers have access to nowadays, and if you don’t watch yourself all your time could get sucked into refreshing your Tumblr dashboard “just one more time,” which is a shame.

Eventually, though, you’ll work out how much time is necessary to spend on each thing to get the maximum benefits. Then you can multi-task to your heart’s content! Just be sure to also pay attention to what’s happening in the real world. Sometimes you just can’t do a thing online when you’ve got a super important thing happening offline– or not without help, at least! But that’s another tip for a different day.

    1. Yup! I don’t mind trying out new things, like Pinterest or something, but I only have so much time I feel I can dedicate to social media stuff and so I tend to stick to things that work best for me. Pinterest doesn’t work for me. So! Yeah.

  1. I had a pretty good balance, but then I got more serious about my writing — the writing that doesn’t go on my blog — and now I find myself writing but not blogging OR blogging but not writing. Neither makes me happy so I’m going to have to work on a way to get a little of both!

    1. I have the same problem whenever I start up a new hobby (or restart an old one)! I always want to focus on the new thing I’m doing, and my blogging suffers. Then the new thing gets less shiny and my blogging starts up again. It’s kind of frustrating!

  2. Agreed. I’d love to spend more time on Pinterest and G+, but I find that I tend to stick to Twitter and Facebook–which is where most readers seem to be anyway.

    Focusing on content is very important, too. I spent 2 years focusing purely on book reviews before making the decision to start including interviews and articles.

    1. Yup! I didn’t do an interview until I’d been blogging for…a year, I think? (Possibly two years.) Doing reviews and meeting other bloggers was more important to me back then.

  3. I am extremely lame at balancing work life and blog life. I’m shockingly bad at it. I feel like I just get worse at it all the time. Speaking of that I really need to schedule some posts. :/ I feel like it was much easier when I was a young blogger to keep things balanced, but it may just be that the hour-long commute has screwed up my life/internet balance forever.

    1. Working in publishing would definitely suck up a lot of your time! So I wouldn’t feel too bad about that. Maybe what you could do is dedicate some of your commute time to writing a blog post? Like, maybe most of it is spent reading/people-watching/whatever, and then ten or fifteen minutes is for writing?
