TBR Wishlist: The Changeover by Margaret Mahy

Hanging around on the internet a lot means I discover tons of books that I WISH were on my To Be Read pile! I don’t own these books yet, but I’d really like to. Welcome to my TBR Wishlist, where I keep track of those books I dream of owning.

Book: The Changeover by Margaret Mahy (1984) The Changeover
Summary:

When her little brother seems to become possessed by an evil spirit, fourteen-year-old Laura seeks the help of the strangely compelling older boy at school who she is convinced has supernatural powers

Rec: a Sarah Rees Brennan interview which I can’t find now. She mentioned The Changeover as being one of her favorite books, though!
Why: Well! First, I like Sarah Rees Brennan’s books. I’m also one of those people who thinks that favorite authors ALWAYS like good books, which is why I’ve read so many books with Neil Gaiman blurbs on them when I otherwise probably wouldn’t have. Therefore, anything SRB likes is something I probably will like, too! And she likes The Changeover.

Secondly, The Changeover looks to be an early version of YA paranormal romances. Okay, I don’t like (most) YA PNR. But! All the ones I’ve read are NEWER books! I haven’t read any pre-2000s YA paranormal romances since that one time I accidentally found a vampire romance book in my middle school’s library.1

I think it might be like the difference between pre-1990s romances and post-1990s romances. Nowadays there tends to be less rapist alpha males and more snuggles2; maybe the same’s true for YA PNR, only in reverse! Like, less creepy stalker boyfriends (modern), more snuggly-yet-tormented ones (olde timey)? Maybe?

Footnotes

  1. all I remember about it was that the vampire had to hide in a closet and I didn’t really understand what was going on. I was in sixth grade. Yeah.
  2. or there SHOULD be more snuggles, anyway.

  1. Hi Anastasia, I was searching for the interview, since I had also read it and misplaced it and I found your post.

Here are the results of my findings on which Sarah talks about the Changeover. I hope this helps.
