The Sunday Salon (Jan. 22): The "this week sucks" edition

The Sunday Salon.com So this past week has been pretty shitty. Why? Because of reasons. Something went wonky at the PO and two of my packages got sent back– including one that I’m pretty sure won’t be refunded, so I’m out $30. I lost my iPod Touch somewhere in a mall somewhere, and no-one’s going to return it even if I ask on Craigslist. And we might not be getting the condo we want that’s basically perfect for all the things we want/need. Also everyone’s at ALA midwinter and I’m besieged by jealousy.

But! We might still get the condo after all (no news yet), Alita is sending me her signed copy of The Fault in Our Stars (thank you, Alita!), and basically everything on my iPod Touch is replacable (and I wanted a updated version anyway). Plus I’m going to ALA annual! So it’s not TOO terrible. Just mostly terrible.

It’s been so terrible I haven’t even really been wanting to read books, which you know is a bad sign. On the other hand, buying books when I’m blue almost always cheers me up! I’m trying to not buy a buttload of paper books right now since we’re still between homes, but I found a lot of ebooks on sale the other day and I went NUTS with my Amazon gift cards. For $1 a book I won’t even feel bad if the books I bought turn out to suck! But I don’t think they’ll suck. So yay for having new books to read! I listed what I bought below, btw.

Besides books, Cute Roulette is extremely cheering. Thanks, Alison, for letting me know about it!

What sort of things cheer you up when you feel like a soggy paperback?

  1. *hugs*

Book-buying is definitely a great pick-me-up, especially when the books are all so cheap. I also got the 10th anniversary AMERICAN GODS from that sale. I’ve wanted to read it ever since it was announced, but my library didn’t buy it and the hardcover is out of my budget. E-book sales to the rescue!

    1. Yay ebooks! And yeah, I’m interested in seeing how it’s different from the version I read. Apparently it’s got stuff in it that was cut out before!

  2. I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a suckish week. Hope next week is better!

I tell you, if I were sad all the time the house would collapse under the weight of all the many books I would buy. When I’m down and there’s a nice used book sale around, things get out of control because nothing makes me feel better when I’m sad than buying a few (dozen) books. 😉

    1. I’m super excited about going to library book sales again, haha! I just know my new room’s gonna be stuffed to the gills with awesomely cheap books.

  3. Oh, you poor thing about the postage. I know how you feel–I almost have a heart attack every time I try to post something. Gosh the postal service costs a bit!

I’m not in a reading slump, but I am doing my very best to avoid buying new books and to stick with those I own, or ecopies from publishers instead. We’ll see how that goes!

    1. I didn’t buy paper books for the whole of 2011, so it feels very indulgent to be buying a bunch of them now. 😀 I love it, haha!

  4. Hugs all around! Poor thing.

What cheers me up? Downloading classic series—Holmes, Barsoom—and feeling quite rich for it. Looking at videos of cute dogs. (I recommend videos of old people getting puppies as gifts. IT’S SO CUTE AND TOUCHING.) Free audiobooks—I’m sure you know about LibriVox. Thrift store diving! And cherry Tootsie Pops. Valentine’s right around the corner, so there’s all that fun candy.

I hope next week doesn’t suck quite so much.

  5. I find going on a book-buying binge to be extremely helpful – and these days, I have just as much fun putting holds at my library and cruising through the library’s ebook site! Hope this week is much better for you.

  6. Book-buying cheers me up too. When I’m feeling blue I often get myself a book on PaperbackSwap or a DVD on SwapaDVD, and that helps me feel better without actually spending any money. Or also (if I can afford it) eating out by myself and reading a book. It feels very luxurious and decadent to sit and eat in a restaurant alone while reading.

    1. I’ve been eating breakfast alone lately and while at first it was weird, I actually really like it now! I bring my Kindle along and get a lot of reading done, too.
