Introverted scholar Percival Endicott Whyborne has spent the last few months watching his lover, Griffin Flaherty, come to terms with the rejection of his adoptive family. So when an urgent telegram from Christine summons them to Egypt, Whyborne is reluctant to risk the fragile peace they’ve established. Until, that is, a man who seems as much animal as human tries to murder Whyborne in the museum.
Amidst the ancient ruins of the pharaohs, they must join Christine and face betrayal, murder, and a legendary sorceress risen from the dead. In the forge of the desert heat, the trio will either face their fears and stand together—or shatter the bonds between them forever.

This was a VERY exciting book! Not only because of the body horror human-animal hybrid situation, but because Whyborne and the gang get out of the country and head over to Egypt! Where it turns out Dr. Christine has a Secret Boyfriend! And there are, like, curses or something! It’s a little predictable in that I guessed at least two important plot points before they happened, but it was also super fun to read.
Honestly, it reminded me of all the best parts of The Mummy, only with more than one female protagonist. Dr. Christine is there, of course, and she is forever my favorite of the series. She’s dealing with a lot of crap in this book, though: not only is somebody trying to take her dig, her secret boyfriend doesn’t know he’s her boyfriend, her sister shows up unexpectedly after having ignored her for a decade or so, and she’s having a self-confidence crisis.
Poor Dr. Christine! I felt so bad for her, but it WAS really great to get to know her better. And a little of her family history, as well![1. her mother disguised herself as a man and fought in the war! And then had major PTSD.] I know I say this every time, but I would totally read an entire series starring Dr. Christine. More Dr. Christine adventures, please!
Her sister, meanwhile, has just as strong a personally as Christine does, even if it was a little squashed because of her terrible husband (now dead, yay). However, one of the downsides of a series is that any new character that shows up will probably either be a) the villain or b) the victim. Guess which one she is! Plus, this book has TWO new characters.
Unfortunately (kind of) I think the next book has them back in Widdershins again, but this was a fun excursion and it was nice to have a different kind of horror than what’s become the standard in this series. (The human-animal hybrids were very spooky.) Also yay for continuous character development! And increasingly better writing on the whole!
